Captains-mentors in SARP training courses



The question remains open about the place of the SARP course itself among other types of simulator training, in particular the RLP courses and the ship maneuvering and control simulator (TMUS). Using the example of the Marine Simulator and Research Center, this issue was resolved by establishing separate training in three programs: radar laying, SARP application, maneuvering and ship control. However, from the very beginning of the work of the IIC, there was a need for an integrated approach to solving the problem of improving the skills of boatmasters.


Currently, the main task of simulators is defined by the requirements of the Convention. In fact, the task of professional development should be set much more broadly, using equipment and specialists to constantly work with cadets of naval schools in training them as radar observers and operators of automatic systems, in a system of advanced training courses to raise the general level of knowledge of senior command staff.


Training centers should be used to train boatmasters operating specific types of SARPs. Training on the effective use of SARPs should be conducted at training centers, taking into account the possibilities and limitations in special navigation areas; skerries, narrownesses, straits, etc.


No matter how modern the simulator equipment and training methods are, positive results of simulator training cannot be achieved without simulator captains with sufficient experience, knowledge, pedagogical abilities, patience, perseverance and, finally, iron health. Only such people are able to start learning a new technique on the simulator, to awaken in the trainees the desire to reflect on the properties and features of the new that it contains.


It is no coincidence that questions are raised at international seminars of simulator training specialists: who should train mentor captains to train skippers, what kind of mentor captains should be on simulators for the use of automatic radar laying facilities? The discussion of this problem, which requires very careful study, will be the subject of a special conversation in the near future. Now, with the formation of simulator training centers, another question arises, related to the previous ones, but requiring a quick solution: what is the position of simulator captains in the general navigation safety system?


If earlier the captains-mentors alone tried to prove their involvement in solving the problem of navigation safety, today it is absolutely necessary to connect highly qualified specialists of simulator training of boatmasters to the daily activities of navigation services — to inspect ships, analyze accidents and certify boatmasters.
