Kennesaw Mountain
While fighting his way toward Atlanta, William T Sherman encountered his biggest roadblock at Kennesaw Mountain, where Joseph E Johnston s Army of Tennessee held a heavily fortified position The opposing armies confronted each other from June 19 to July 3, 1864, and Sherman initially tried to outflank the Confederates His men endured heavy rains, artillery duels, sniping, and a fierce battle at Kolb s Farm before Sherman decided to directly attack Johnston s position on June 27 Kennesaw Mountain tells the story of an important phase of the Atlanta campaign Historian Earl J Hess explains how this battle, with its combination of maneuver and combat, severely tried the patience and endurance of the common soldier and why Johnston s strategy might have been the Confederates best chance to halt the Federal drive toward Atlanta He gives special attention to the engagement at Kolb s Farm on June 22 and Sherman s assault on June 27 A final section explores the Confederate earthworks preserved within the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. New Download [ Kennesaw Mountain ] Author [ Earl J. Hess ] – kino-fada.fr A detailed analysis of a key campaign of the war Hess does not disappoint with this installment I had read several of his other works and this book was one of the better ones Hess keeps the writing clear and concise and this book is good for the general reader or the devoted history buff.I enjoyed this book Mr Hess set out to write a history of the battle trying to objectively show both sides of the story For the most part, I find that Mr Hess was able to accomplish his goal Before reading the book, I had little knowledge of the battle I knew that Sherman threw his army at Johnston s lines and was repulsed and that is all After reading the book, I now know that the battle was basically a reconnaissance in force and a bloody one at that My complaints about he kept extending his lines with the hope of turning the flank, I thought that the battle was fought on the right, or east, side of the mountain At times, I felt a...Not a bad history of the battles surrounding Kennesaw Mountain, but it considerable detail Sometimes I felt I was slogging along with the soldiers As someone who lives one mile from the battlefield park and drives all the roads frequently, I had only two problems with the book One was that the it wasn t equally balanced between the federals under Sherman and the confederates under Johnston As I was reading I was aware of a bias towards the stories and sketches toward the federal movements an Not a bad history of the battles surrounding Kennesaw Mountain, but it considerable detail Sometimes I felt I was slogging along of written history since it is well known that the GAR controlled much of what was published about the Civil War for many years to the victor goes the right to write the history A quick check of the index bears this out as Johnston was mentioned on only 34 pages, while Sherman got a mention of 68 My impression in reading was a two to one advantage My second complaint was with the sketch maps They were well drawn and easy to read, but contained n...If you re only going to read 1 book about the battles around Johnston s Kennesaw Mountain line, this is the one to choose He objectively discusses considering the author s previous works emphasizes the role of fieldworks I usually don t read standard battle histories for my personal or professional development, but I grew up just down ...Being a
