the premise of this book is about as unlikely as the unicorn she has gazing at the departing Noah s ark Pulling it off requires a minor miracle, apropos of the secular deification of Dale Earnhardt, and she does it with panache The pilgrims are a very diverse group, and their characterizations are well drawn Strangers to start with, the story is much about how they get on together and cohere I don t know much about NASCAR, but the technic One suspects Ms McCrumb has a whim ...I really want to re read thisa loose retelling of the Canterbury Tales all set in the contemporary USA featuring people dealing with the death of Dale Sr Amazing.The story revolves around a group of Dale Earnhart fans who take a bus trip to remember Dale a year after his death The characters were wonderful and very diverse There is quite a bit of information about drivers and the different race tracks that they visit, which I found quite interesting.Too much NASCAR, not enough Canterbury Tales.There are certainly parallels to Canterbury Tales, but they re mostly superficial The characters are going on a pilgrimage There are characters whose last names are Knight though he s actually a priest from Canterbury Massachusettsor maybe New Hampshire Somewhere a young Petty died, apparently , Franklin, and Reeve the last of which is a county auditor, which I thought was a nice modern version of a
